When to sharpen and when to replace an industrial blade

Working with a worn blade increases electrical consumption, material temperature and fines production. However, replacing it prematurely also increases maintenance costs. The correct decision depends on the state of the cutting edge and the geometry available for re-sharpening.

Symptoms that the blade needs sharpening

  • Decrease in production capacity.
  • Higher motor consumption or load peaks.
  • Irregular cut, excess powder or unprocessed material.
  • Increase in temperature in the cutting chamber.
  • Cut gap out of tolerance.

In granulator mills it is advisable to check the rotor blades, stator, screws and supports at the same time. Mounting a sharp blade in front of a damaged bedknife prevents recovering the original performance.

When is it better to replace

Replacement is usually necessary when there are cracks, deformation, excessive loss of height, damaged holes or deep corrosion. Also when the number of sharpenings has reduced the section to the point of compromising rigidity or preventing correct adjustment.

Measurements before and after service

A professional sharpening must control flatness, parallelism, angle, roughness and absence of burns. Afterwards, it is necessary to record the new measurement to adjust shims and maintain the separation indicated by the manufacturer.

Sharp Industrial offers industrial sharpening and machining. If the part is no longer recoverable, we can manufacture a new one from a drawing, sample or measurements.

Calculate the real cost of each alternative

The comparison should not be limited to the price of sharpening versus a new blade. Transportation, assembly, shims, downtime, and production obtained after service should be included. Cheap grinding that doesn’t recover geometry can be more expensive per ton.

Sharpening limits

Each machine allows a maximum height reduction. When removing material the position of the cutting edge changes and it may be necessary to compensate with shims. The holes, countersinks and supports must retain sufficient section. For serrated blades or blades with special profiles, it must also be checked that the geometry can be regenerated.

Damage requiring analysis

An isolated chip can be removed if there is dimensional margin. Cracks should be evaluated more cautiously: sharpening the surface does not guarantee that the crack has disappeared. Burns, deformations and loss of hardness are signals for replacement or additional checks.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can a blade be sharpened?

There is no universal number. It depends on the wear removed in each service and the minimum size allowed.

Should the entire set be sharpened?

Normally yes, to maintain uniform heights, load distribution and adjustment.

Can the angle be changed to make it last longer?

Modifying it can increase resistance, but it also changes effort and quality of cut. It must be validated according to machine and material.

How to transport blades for sharpening?

Use edge protectors, dividers, and rigid packaging. The pieces must not hit each other.

Maintaining a dimensional history allows you to decide in advance when to order the next set.
