Hardfacing knife holders: assess the part before repair

Wear of the blade holder can affect the fixation and support of the tool even if the cutting edge retains its shape. The repair must begin with an inspection of the piece and the identification of the base material.

Separate wear and structural damage

Document material loss, deformations and possible cracks. Check threads, housings and seating surfaces. Hardfacing can recover certain areas subject to wear, but it does not by itself resolve a deformed part or guarantee the integrity of a damaged section.

Define a compatible procedure

The choice of filler and procedure depends on the base steel and the service. The thermal effect, crack control and subsequent machining must be studied. Generic welding parameters should not be applied to a part whose composition or history is unknown.

Validate the repaired part

  • Check the geometry and position of the supports.
  • Inspect repaired areas according to agreed procedure.
  • Check fixing and mounting according to the machine documentation.
  • Record the job to compare the next operating period.

Before offering a repair, Sharp Industrial needs photographs, reference, known material and description of the damage. The assessment will decide if it is viable to recover the part or if it should be replaced.
