Heat treatment of industrial knives: checks for each batch

An industrial blade is defined by its geometry, its steel and the treatment it receives. The designation of the material is the starting point: to assess the result it is also important to know the specified hardness, traceability and the checks carried out after heat treatment.

Quenching and tempering work together

The treatment is selected according to the steel, thickness and function of the part. Tempering is part of the process to obtain service properties; should not be omitted when comparing two offers. A recipe destined for another steel or another section cannot be transferred without evaluation.

What to ask from the supplier

  • Identification of the steel and the lot.
  • Target hardness, test scale and measurement points.
  • Flatness control and functional measurements after treatment.
  • Inspection record and agreed acceptance criteria.

From the certificate to the machine

The actual behavior also depends on the cutting edge, the supports, the clearance and the processed material. Relate batch data to work hours, tons treated and wear mode. This way you can study improvements with comparable information.

As a reference on 1.2379 steel, you can consult the technical sheet BÖHLER K110 . Parameters must be agreed upon for the specific blade and application.
